Everyone is invited to a free event at Bristol’s Eastgate Oriental City, 11.15am on Sunday, 17th February, to celebrate the arrival of the Chinese Year of the Snake. Visitors will be treated to a live firecracker and traditional lion dance performance – along with bubble tea from Bristol-based CUPP Tea Bar – as part of the festivities.
The event is organised by Wai Yee Hong, a family-run Chinese Supermarket based in Bristol for over 30 years. Manager, Allison Chow says: “Chinese New Year is the most important festival in the Chinese calendar; when families get together to see out the old year and celebrate the new. We love organising this event because it’s a lovely way to share our culture with everyone.”
Preparations for Chinese New Year begin weeks beforehand, and once the day arrives, celebrations continue over 15 days. 2013 is the Year of the Snake (starting 10th February), which is the sixth sign in the Chinese zodiac. Those born in the Year of the Snake are said to be the deep thinkers of the zodiac, and are known for their wisdom and humanitarianism.
