Kai Taylor, Executive Head Chef at The Bristol Hotel, has added his own inimitable style to the ever-popular Afternoon Tea.

Out go traditional finger sandwiches and in come open sandwiches with a modern twist: smoked salmon and cucumber, mature cheddar and chive mayonnaise, shredded ham and gherkin mustard, and roasted tomato and spinach cream cheese.

Accompanying cakes are a little more traditional and include a Victoria sponge, a chocolate brownie but with a cherry twist, a coffee and walnut cake, and tea bread slices, as well as the icing on the cake: freshly-baked scones with home-made jam – made by none other than the Chef himself – and, of course, clotted cream.

Afternoon tea is served daily in The Bristol Hotel bar and lounge area, between 2pm and 5pm, and costs £17.50 per person. For something a little stronger than a cup of tea, guests can also order a Hendrick’s gin cocktail for £5 or a glass of Champagne for £7:50.

With or without an alcoholic tipple, afternoon tea is a lovely way to celebrate a baby shower, birthday or anniversary, or simply enjoy a great British tradition. And for those who wish to make more of it, there’s the chance to stay on after tea and overnight. Double rooms at The Bristol Hotel start at just £89 per room per night, on a B&B basis.
