Bagel Boy, The Elbow Room: Review

Spread the love

Those living and working in the Park Street area now have a new take away lunch option available in the form of Bagel Boy: a brand new bagel bar located within pool hall and bar The Elbow Room.

Founded by Mitchell Church and Leo Thompson, Bagel Boy’s launch party took place on June 16th 2012, and the brand offers a range of filled bagels, drinks, crisps and cakes to the lunchtime trade.

Bagel Boy is a counter at the front of The Elbow Room, and is open during the day, closing in the evenings when the drinkers and pool players start to arrive.

Unlike many of the existing Park Street lunch options, the pair wanted a real focus on local ingredients for Bagel Boy. The bagels themselves (both plain and sesame varieties are available) are from Boulangerie de France in Gloucester, while the smoked salmon comes from the respected Chew Valley Smokehouse. Ruby and White supply the meat fillings, while salads and vegetables are provided by Reg The Veg in Clifton Village.

The menu offers a selection of pre-determined combinations of fillings, with prices starting at just £3.20 for the “Veggie Boy” – grilled peppers, halloumi, pesto mayo, tomato, watercress and rocket salad. A range of brownies (£1.20) and muffins (£1.60) is also available, and you can have your bagel made into a meal deal by adding a packet of crisps (normally £1) and a can of drink/bottle of water (normally 80p) for £5.

On my visit, I chose the “Upstream Boy” (£3.80) – “smoked salmon and peppered cream cheese, with watercress and rocket salad and a squeeze of lemon.” I’ll definitely be heading back for lunch again. The bagel itself was enormous and clearly freshly baked that day(from part-baked, I know…), the fillings were generous….the whole thing was a world away from the bland and mass produced offerings that most filled bagels consist of.

In the near future, Bagel Boy are planning on offering monthly specials and breakfast bagels – and they already offer free delivery within the Park Street area. All you need to do is to text or call them before 11.30am to guarantee delivery for lunchtime – and they offer discounts of 10% and upwards depending on the number ordered, making it a great option for office lunches.

If you’re in the area, Bagel Boy is definitely a worthwhile option for a filling and reasonably priced lunch. Recommended.
