I wrote earlier this week about the opening of Brace & Browns at 43 Whiteladies Road, previously home to Deason’s restaurant but standing empty for a few years before its recent reincarnation. BS8 seems to be a popular area for new food and drink venues at the moment, with another three having recently opened…
Meghna Cuisine at 133 Hotwells Road opened its doors on March 24th. The family behind the business are already known for restaurants that they have run in the Clifton and Redland areas over the last 15-20 years, including Korai House and Bristol Raj. Their opening offer is running until June 30th: 15% off takeaway and delivery within a 3 mile radius, or 20% off for those choosing to eat in the restaurant. No website as yet, but you can find their Facebook page here with more information.
An even newer addition to the Indian restaurant scene is Clifton Village’s Rupsha at 3a Regent Street. Opening night is on Sunday, May 1st, with special offers promised over the first few weeks after opening. From the menu that I’ve seen, the food seems to be very reasonably priced, with “traditional dishes” at £5.95 and house specialities priced at £7.95 including pilau rice. Dishes are available to eat in, take away, or for free delivery.
Finally, Havana Coffee have decided to spread their wings and have now opened a branch at 6 Clifton Down Road, next to WH Smith. Their Cotham Hill branch has been open since 2001 – I’ve not yet been but others have raved about their breakfasts. With an outdoor seating area, free WiFi and newspapers, a range of organic teas and coffee and a multitude of breakfast options, I’ll have to head up there for a lazy Sunday morning at some point soon…
Wow, Havana Coffee is extremely expensive… £8 for a breakfast with not a lot on it…..
Try Cafe Cosmopolitan. Staff are excellent and so is the food. All prepped and served well.
The interior is needing a little updating but it still has great atmosphere and it's well placed on Whiteladies Road, next to Morgan Beddoe Estate Agents.
mmm, JC thats strange because we don,t have breakfast that is £8 !!!!! you shoe you went to right place?? the BIG breakfast is £ 7.50, but you can have all day including tea or coffee for £ 5.95 and you get 2 sausage,2 bacon,2 hashbrawns, mushrooms, beans, fried egg and toast, i leave your imagination for the big one unless you own the cosmo ?? but never mind
Wasn't a property next door to WH Smiths once Splinters coffee bar, where the thrusting young businessmen of Clifton would chat up the waitresses and invite them to the Ashton Court Country Club? There was of course another side to Ashton Court CC: the swimming pool, very convenient for my then young cousins who lived not far away.
I love Indian food, and if the people behind Bristol Raj are the ones running Meghna Cuisine, then I'm surely going to check them out soon. As for Rupsha, would you know if they serve Balti or only authentic Indian cuisine? Cant seem to find this info on the internet. Thanks for the updates on the newly opened places.
Hi Jane,
I have a copy of the Rupsha menu at home, so I'll check tonight for you – I'll also post contact details including phone number. Would be good to hear your thoughts on Meghna if you do try them!
