Maria Taylor shares some of her favourite Bristol dining establishments and dishes…

Bristol might not be the first place you think about when it comes to good food, but it is easily one of the top foodie destinations in the UK. With many chefs creating delectable dishes from homegrown, local produce, you can guarantee you are in for a fresh tasting meal when dining at many of the city’s top restaurants.

If you are in need of a little assistance choosing the best establishment for your next outing or visit to the city, read the below advice on eating out in Bristol.

The Best of Britain at Pieminister

Where do you find the best pies in Britain? You might immediately think of Wigan, right? Well, you could not be more wrong, as the best place to visit is one of three Pieministers in Bristol. It is the ultimate place to visit to treat yourself to a classic British pie and mash. You can take your pick from traditional steak and kidney pie to vegetarian options. There are even gluten-free options on the menu.

Treat Yourself at Beehive Coffee House

The Beehive Coffee House not only serves up an excellent cup of joe, but they are now providing their customers with some pretty incredible freakshakes. The independently-run café is offering fun, flavoursome milkshakes that are topped with everything from doughnuts, marshmallows, chocolate bars, sprinkles, pretzels and more. There’s even a Harry Potter freakshake, which you need to order at least once in your life.

Feel the Buzz of Pata Negra

If you love a bustling atmosphere and delicious tapas, make your way to Pata Negra. The wine and tapas restaurant has become an integral part of the Bristol culinary scene, even playing host to the pop-up kitchen at the All-in Kitchen event in 2015. There is no need to book a table unless you are in a large group, and you can indulge in scrumptious Spanish dishes such as salmon tartare, chorizo al vino tinto, and, of course, churros con dulce de leche.

Experience a Melting Pot of Flavours at St Nicholas Market

Those who appreciate good food from passionate chefs must visit St Nicholas Market, which is a local hidden gem. Located within the centre of Bristol, you can try the finest street food found in the city. For instance, you will be bursting with energy after a fruity smoothie, you can experience a burst of flavour with their locally-sourced sausages, and you will deserve a medal if you can make your way through their large but delicious portions of falafel.

Indulge in Tradition at Cox and Baloney Tearoom

It is hard not to fall head over heels in love with Cox and Baloney Tearoom, which offers a shabby chic décor due to its flowered wallpaper and mismatched furniture. Once you have been seated, you will be able to choose from 15 different tea varieties, which each have a fun name, such as Granny’s Garden (elderberries and blackberries), Catherine of Braganza (peach and apricot white tea), and Mr Darcy (English breakfast black tea).

You can also choose from different afternoon tea options to suit your budget and appetite. You will be able to indulge in traditional scones, finger sandwiches, and yummy cakes. There is no better place to treat yourself in the city.

A Laidback Lunch at The Bristol Flyer

You will realise just how delicious pub grub can be when you visit The Bristol Flyer, which can be found on Gloucester Road. Complementing their roomy bar, restaurant and beer garden are their tasty, generous roasts, which will definitely fill your belly on a Sunday. The relaxed, chilled environment also makes it the perfect place to visit for a laid-back dinner with your partner, friends or family. Locals also don’t just visit the pub for its food either, as the electric atmosphere makes it the perfect destination for a casual drink in casual clothing.

Of course, these are just a handful of some of the best restaurants, pubs, coffee shops and tearooms Bristol has to offer. The city is full to the brim with exceptional establishments just waiting to be explored.
