Turns out the BBQ trend isn’t quite over, as Voodoo Q has opened on Gloucester Road – serving up the biggest burger Bristol has to offer, along with various other smoked and grilled dishes.
It’s the second venture for the team who already operate a branch of Voodoo Q from a pub in Cirencester – and now they’re trying their luck at 185 Gloucester Road, the former home of Food Nation.
On the menu, expect plenty of BBQ favourites: small dishes such as burnt ends, chicken wings and smoked sausage; various hot dogs and burgers; dishes from the smoker that include brisket, ribs and pulled pork; and even a vegetarian and vegan section with dishes that are more exciting than most, including pulled pork-style jack fruit and root veg.
The desserts are equally decadent – think peanut butter brownies, sticky toffee pudding, knickerbocker glories and more – and there’s a dedicated children’s menu with a choice of seven dishes, priced at £6 including dessert.
What’s really got Bristol’s attention, though, is The High Priest Challenge Burger – which I’m convinced must be the biggest burger in Bristol. Priced at £30, it stands almost 30cm tall – and as you’d expect from the name, there’s a food challenge attached to it too. Finish this beast – which includes four 8oz patties, bacon, cheese, chilli, pork, brisket and more, along with fries, pickles and slaw – within an hour, and you’ll have your name and photo added to Voodoo Q’s Wall of Flame, plus you’ll receive a bottle of beer and a choice of chilli sauces from the Upton Cheyney Chilli Farm.
