If you’re fascinated by fungi, there’s a three-day course taking place in Bristol this September that’ll be right up your street…
Community food-growing project Feed Bristol are running the course from September 15th to 17th, from their home on Frenchay Park Road. The course begins with an introduction to fungal biology, diversity and ecology, exploring how incredible and important these organisms are, before exploring several outdoor and indoor growing techniques for a range of delicious edible fungi.
Experienced tutors Rich Wright and Patrick Mallery will cover everything you need to know to get growing your own fungi, from obtaining and storing fungi strains, right the way through to the development of grain spawn and production blocks. They will show you how to use the spawn you have made to create outdoor fungi beds and fungi log cultures, which can be integrated into your garden or allotment.
Following on from the understanding gained in the first two days, the third day will focus on field identification skills. The pair will be introducing the main groups of fungi, how to tell them apart, where to find them, and, most importantly, how to do it safely!
Course places can be booked via this website, with prices varying depending on income level:
Participants claiming benefits: £90
Participants on low income (less than £15,000): £120
Participants earning above living wage (more than £15,000): £180
