June 2015 Degustabox: Review

Another month, another Degustabox – and a very snack-centric one this month! These monthly food subscription boxes cost £12.99 per month (including delivery), and feature a random selection of products that are worth far more than what you pay. I love the fact that each box is also a surprise, so you only know what you’re going to receive when it actually arrives…

June’s box had a bit of a picnic theme, including a range of sweet and savoury snacks and drinks as follows…

Starting with the drinks, and a bit of a disappointment… I’m a big fan of coconut water, but while the Vybe coconut water (RRP £1.89) that the box included was still within its use-by date, it tasted completely off. Such a shame.

The Rekorderlig Strawberry & Lime cider (RRP £1.49) is still waiting to be drunk – I’ve tried it before and I’m not a massive fan of its sweetness, but I know that it’s much-loved by others!

I’ve also tried the Zeo soft drinks before (RRP £1.29 each), and I wasn’t a fan – they just taste too artificial to me, and have a strange aftertaste. You can read my full review here.

Onto the food, and far more positive experiences! This month’s box includes two different Brioche Pasquier products: the Pitch chocolate filled brioche, and the Pitch chocolate chip brioche (RRP £1.70 for both). Individually wrapped and so perfect for snacks and lunch boxes, we preferred the former, with their thick and gooey centre, but also loved the chocolate chip brioche – we used both packs as snacks on long car journeys.

Probably my favourite product in the June Degustabox was the pack of Love Chin Chin (RRP £1): cinnamon-flavoured African snacks that look like long, thin biscuits. They’re super-crunchy, but flavour-wise, the pack doesn’t lie: they’re pretty cake-like in their taste, and very moreish!

I also received two products from the Kallo range – one sweet, one savoury. The first was a bag of Sea Salt and Vinegar corn and rice snacks (RRP 70p): about the same size as a packet of crisps but with only 91 calories and gluten free. They were a great alternative to crisps with a relatively subtle flavour – delicious.

On the sweet front, I also received a packet of Kallo’s Belgian milk chocolate rice cake thins with caramel pieces (RRP £1.69). While they feel pretty decadent, with a decent layer of chocolate and plenty of sweet caramel pieces, they’re only 65 calories per square so perfect for a relatively guilt-free sweet treat.

Sadly I didn’t get to try the Icycl vodka ice pop (RRP £2.50) as it was damaged and had leaked – it’s a nice idea, though. At 6.5% ABV, they’re supplied defrosted and you simply pop them in the freezer and eat from the packaging when frozen – a good idea as an alternative to standard ice lollies.

I haven’t yet used the Coconom organic coconut sugar (RRP £3.25) – I need to do some baking! The Degustabox leaflet included a recipe for brownies, though, so I may substitute the regular sugar in my chocolate brownie recipe for this and see how it works…

The final product in my June Degustabox was a packet of multigrain Melba Thins (RRP £1.39) – perfect for our household, as we often just opt for cheese, meats, pate and salads for dinner. These are a perfect accompaniment to cheese, with plenty of crunch, a good texture and a flavour that is subtle (which I think it good, as it doesn’t overpower what you put on them. I also like the fact that they are sold in boxes that contain ten packs of six thins, each individually wrapped to avoid them from going stale.

A pretty good box for June – a shame about the drinks, but I was impressed with the snacks. For more information about Degustabox or to subscribe, visit www.degustabox.com/en. Use code JX5IG when you sign up, and you’ll enjoy a £3 discount on your first order too…

Please note: this box was received free of charge, but in no way impacted on our opinion. We were not obliged to write a positive review, and the company did not see this review before it was put up on the site.
