April Fools’ Day 2015: A food and drink joke round-up…

How many of you have been taken in by any of this year’s plethora of April Fools’ jokes? While some of the jokes posted by businesses are pretty obviously rubbish, some of them are pretty clever – and some just advertise products that we really wish we could buy…

We’ve been treated to plenty of food and drink related “fools” this year – have you been taken in by any of these, or have you seen others that were any better…?

Over on Twitter, there’s been plenty of activity. Walkers Crisps have told us about their new self-seasoning crisps, while Toblerone have told the world about their new, hollow Toblerone Light – essentially, a Toblerone without the good bits… Pot Noodle tweeted about their new range of Pot Noodle-scented car air fresheners (so glad these aren’t real…), while Marmite shared the news of the launch of the brand new Marmite Clear. Now that would be impressive. And Tesco? Well, they’re obviously trialling new bouncy aisles in their supermarkets, so everyone can reach the top shelves… Bizarrely, Gumtree actually paid to promote the tweet about their breath-freshening GumTea – a little odd. I wouldn’t mind the new thermoflour from Dr Zak’s, though, which promises to keep toast warm for up to an hour

On YouTube, Domino’s Pizza have obviously spent big with their April Fools’ campaign, with a video that gives a sneak peek of their new driverless delivery vehicle – and Pizza Hut have also gone down the video route with details of their new scratch and sniff menu.

Head to Facebook, and you’ll find that Vegemite have fooled fans with the promised launch of an interactive exhibition inside a giant Vegemite jar on top of their factory, and Tetley claim to have invented “Tetley Tea Mail“, which allows you to send friends and family the perfect cuppa by post. Also on Facebook, Toby Carvery have spread the news about their Toby Carvery Kebabs – simply ask for a stick from their team, and skewer as many items as you can…

Last year, Renshaw Baking‘s Facebook page had news of their new cheese icing, while this year they claim to have launched a glow in the dark variety. Mr Kipling have promised to drop the yellow Fondant Fancies from their boxes as nobody eats them,  Beefeater are rebranding to Leafeater for a change of focus, and Costa Coffee claim to have launched a new “Costa and a kip” service. And as for Lambrini…well, I’m not so sure that their Peel ‘n’ Lick labels would go down too well in real life!

In other news, the Northampton Chronicle published a story about Carlsberg trialling delivery via drones (there have been SO MANY drone-related “fools” this year…), while a variety of Scottish papers published the news that Tennent’s had developed a new system that allows you to pour yourself the perfect pint from your kitchen tapKinetica claim to have developed a new way of increasing lean muscle mass with their centipede protein bars, and Bidvest 3663 broke the news on their website that they’re now offering crispy fried potato plates (Po-Plate-Os) which can either be eaten or easily composted…

Firebox‘s Kim Kardashian jelly mould and Yeezus Juice may actually have had some fooled – well, they’re a brand known for their quirky products…

We love a good local Fool too – and a couple of companies haven’t failed to disappoint! Local favourite Pieminister shared details of their new pie-scented candle range on their Facebook page, while also on Facebook, Wriggle posted a status update that sought freelance foodies to be paid to eat and drink their way around Bristol.

I’m always amazed at how many food and drink brands get in on the act when it comes to April Fools’ Day – and some of these are actually surprisingly good!
