The market town of Mildenhall hasn’t really been on my radar as somewhere to visit, to be honest. That is, until Wokwraps opened their second venue there in mid-February this year.

I first tried their Chinese fusion food at the Bury St Edmunds market not long after moving here: a tortilla wrap stuffed with chips, salt and pepper chicken, crispy onions and plenty of sweet chilli sauce. Messy to eat? Yes indeed. Worth it? Absolutely.

Since then, owner Jamie Burgis opened a permanent premises at Beach Street in Felixstowe. Now, he’s added Mildenhall to his collection. We decided to visit a few days after his latest venture opened.

You’ll find it in a corner of the Market Place retail precinct, just along from Domino’s. I won’t lie: I would have struggled to find it without the masses of balloons outside. Wokwraps’ premises in Mildenhall seems more set up for takeaway orders. You will find tables, though, each with its own lamp and a little vase of flowers.

You’ll find the menu above the counter, as well as in printed versions. At Wokwraps, you’ll find wraps, rice bowls, wok boxes (with chips), chicken on its own, and a selection of sides and drinks.

When you’re ready to order, you head up to the counter, place your order, pay, and receive a ticket with your order number.

While we waited for our food to arrive, we received a free basket of crunchy prawn crackers and a pot of sweet chilli dip – a nice touch!

The first dish to arrive was my son’s order of gyoza (£7.50). Deep fried, they were nice and crispy – the filling was pretty average but he seemed to enjoy them. They came with a sizeable salad, and plenty of sliced red chilli (which he handed over to us!)

The two of us went for wok boxes, priced at £11 each. They’re piled high with chips, crispy onions and spring onions, plus a choice of five topping and sauce combos.

The honey sesame chicken wok box starred plenty of sweet, crispy coated chicken and a liberal amount of garlic mayo, the whole thing scattered with loads of sesame seeds to finish it off. My salt and pepper chicken wok box was beautiful: the chicken with a decent amount of heat, the sweet chilli sauce generous. The chips themselves were decent, too: nice and crispy and beautifully seasoned.

My first Wokwraps experience in Bury St Edmunds had been amazing, so did Wokwraps in Mildenhall live up to expectations? Absolutely. It’s a great addition to the town, and I wish them the best of luck!
