New Dawn Traders sets sail for Bristol

On Sunday, 30th August, New Dawn Traders will bring a ship full of bounty to Bristol, connecting small overseas producers to UK consumers, powered by wind alone.

An experimental fair-trade collective, New Dawn Traders calls for people to re-think their shopping habits and invest in the creation of a sustainable shipping economy. Consumers are asked to purchase goods in advance, and the risk of the voyage is shared by many. Orders can be collected on August 30th from the ship itself, which drastically reduces distribution and storage needs. And by buying in larger quantities for longer periods, packaging is reduced and money is saved.

New Dawn Traders has a growing network of ships, producers and allies, building new models of trade designed to put planet and people first. Farmers and producers load their cargo directly onto the ship, which is taken port to port through carbon-neutral shipping so that consumers can enjoy great global food and drink with minimal environmental impact.

The cargo will include almonds, mezcal, panela, rice, olives, pulses, coffee and honey, as well as Portuguese olive oil: the product that inspired New Dawn Traders’ first voyage. Working with an olive oil sommelier in Central Portugal, the company has now partnered with four olive farmers, all making exceptional olive oil in harmony with their local ecosystems, nurturing both people and planet from soil to serving. As with all New Dawn Traders cargo, the product is bought for a fair price, shipped fossil fuel-free and imports a unique product that can’t be grown or produced in the UK.

New Dawn Traders’ latest voyage will be aboard the Gallant, part of the Blue Schooner Company’s fleet, a former fishing lugger on the North Sea, built in 1916. The voyage is being shared with Xisto Wines, a Bristol-based wine importer specialising in small producer wines from Portugal. Departing Porto, Portugal on Friday 7 August, the Gallant will dock in Bristol on Sunday 30 August, before visiting Penzance, Newhaven, Ramsgate, London and Great Yarmouth.

All products can be ordered from www.newdawntraders.com, with both collection and delivery options available.
