Did any of you ever visit The Velindra on Commercial Road? We went once, stayed for half a pint then moved swiftly on. It wasn’t one of Bristol’s destination pubs by any means.
Now, though, the team behind The Doghouse on St Stephen’s Street are trying to change the venue’s reputation.
The Nook opened on Friday, July 15th. They describe themselves as “a melting pot of superbly delicious booze & food trimmed with decadence, wrapped in a cosy steampunk bar”: here, you’ll find an impressive-sounding menu, a wide variety of drinks that include great craft beers, their own Nook Lager (a cross between a weissbier and a lager) and a short cocktail list, and plenty of plans for the future.
It’s not the most inviting-looking building from the outside, but the grey seems to work on the interior. There’s plenty of seating, with plans to install high bar seating next to the bar (and an accompanying bar snacks menu), and to open up the garden at the back for customers.
We’re looking forward to trying the food – it’s certainly a big step up from the old Velindra days! And with the opening of the General Hospital flats and retail units, we’re hoping that these guys are nice and busy.
The Nook is open from 8am (they serve breakfast) to between 10 and 11pm. Review to come soon…
