Charity FareShare SouthWest catering enterprise, The Surplus Supper Club, are to serve up a festive surplus supper in their Warehouse Winter Wonderland for local businesses and groups.
Food waste is a current hot topic both for individuals and industries. Bristol as a forward-thinking city is home to a number of projects that aim to tackle food waste and food poverty simultaneously.
One of those is FareShare South West, a charity that works with the food industry to salvage good quality, in-date food and redistribute it to organisations working with vulnerable adults across the South West.
Faced with funding deficits and surrounded by food, the enterprising CEO, Jacqui Reeves, set up the catering enterprise. The Surplus Supper Club’s principles are founded on the 3 p’s of sustainability: people – offering training and support for those getting back to work; planet – diverting good food from landfill; profit – reinvesting all profits in FareShare South West.
The Surplus Supper Club, works with professional chefs who share this ethos and enjoy making menus from an ever-changing larder of ‘surplus food’. They have built a reputation serving fine dining banquets at festivals, weddings and more recently offering buffets for local conferences and events.
Earlier in the year, as part of Food Connections, FareShare South West hosted an 80 person, three course dinner and panel discussion in their Warehouse. The venue was so well received by the attendees that an idea was born to recreate the experience for the festive season. There is nothing quite like being served a delicious meal of unwanted food whilst being surrounded by walls stacked to the ceiling with cereals, to comprehend the realities of our modern food systems.
So during two weekends in December those wishing to experience an original Christmas party experience, with an ethical and sustainable dimension can attend a Friday ‘fine dining experience’ (Friday 4th and Friday 11th December) or a more relaxed Saturday ‘two course dinner’ (Saturday 5th and Saturday 12th December) in the Warehouse Winter Wonderland. The parties promise to be lots of fun with music and party games.
