Mikado boxes

*I have received product from Mikado for this post. It is an entry to the Foodies100 Stick out your personality challenge sponsored by Mikado. Mikado are unique, long & ultra-thin crunchy biscuit sticks coated with smooth milk chocolate, with one end left bare so that you don’t get sticky fingers when eating. Mikado comes in four delicious flavours: Milk, White, Daim and Choco King, and stocked in all major supermarkets at an RRP of £1.39. You must have tried Mikado before, right? These long, thin, crunchy biscuit sticks coated with chocolate (with a choc-free end so you don’t get sticky fingers while eating!) are only 11 calories each, and they actually remind me of trips to France when I was younger, when I was introduced to these sweet treats for the first time.

Mikado has made its name as a quirky brand (just look at their Facebook posts and you’ll see why!): a brand which likes to celebrate the traits of different characters and personalities through their Mikado eating rituals. This summer, they’ve launched a brand new campaign which centres on the concept of “Sticking out Your Personality”, encouraging Mikado fans to embrace, express and stick out their personality in a fun and engaging way.

To take part, just upload a Mikado-related selfie to Twitter or Instagram, tagging @Mikado_UK and using the hashtag #MikadoBy. By doing so, you’ll have the chance to win an iPhone or Mikado goodies, including bundles of the snacks themselves and Mikado selfie sticks. You can see the full t&cs here.

I was challenged to take part in the campaign, with my task being “to take a selfie of yourself sticking out your personality while eating Mikado to show us your true personality!” To help me out, I was sent an oversized Mikado box containing four regular sized boxes of Mikado and a selfie stick – plus a photo frame…

The next question was…how could I best express my personality with Mikado? As you’ve probably gathered, simply from Bristol Bites, I love writing. I never knew I’d manage to make a career out of it, but freelance writing is now my “thing” – I edit a local food magazine, I’m a Content Editor for a local content marketing firm, and I do the odd blog post or newsletter for others here and there too.

After leaving uni and starting a career in market research, I thought that writing industry white papers and conference presentations was the closest I’d get to a writing career – luckily, I was wrong, and I started working for myself in 2013. Writing’s always been in my blood – check out this poem I wrote in 1990 (I was 7…) – I think it’s actually pretty good!

Fast forward to this year, and my dad’s just had the first book in his trilogy of young adult novels published (more info here), so my love of writing must be genetic!

I figured a writing-related selfie was the way to go. Working from home, it can sometimes be hard to motivate myself to write, but with a tasty treat in my hand and a gorgeous view of the river from our living room, I love curling up on the sofa to write – either for work or pleasure. In the selfie below (this is a big thing – I hate photos of myself!) I’ve decided to use a Mikado stick as a pen…
