The Greenbank pub in Easton scooped the prestigious ‘Best Pub’ award at the inaugural Western Daily Press Food and Farming Awards held at the Marriott Hotel on Monday 11 April. The pub was re-opened by Zazu’s Kitchen following a concerted campaign by local residents to re-open the pub and oppose plans to demolish the building.

The Greenbank, re-opened in March 2014, acts as a community hub by organising music and comedy nights, quizzes, resident group meetings and a range of children’s activities. Events manager, Patrick Winch, believes the pub’s success is testament to the work of the community. Patrick said, “I’m absolutely thrilled and delighted to collect this award on behalf of all the people that have made the pub successful over the past year. The dedication of the community to re-open it, the vision of the management to transform it, and the ongoing hard work of all the staff makes this award fully deserved.”

The pub is also involved in events wider than just its own community: for example, in May it is one venue for the nationwide Pint of Science Festival, and in late June it will host a week of comedy to showcase acts performing at the Edinburgh Festival later this year. It also offers a constantly evolving menu, including locally sourced produce, and a plethora of real ales.

James Savage from Zazu’s Kitchen, the Bristol-based restaurant and pub collective, who also runs The Grace on Gloucester Road, added “It’s been a sensational first year for us and this is the icing on the cake to receive such an accolade. We are delighted to be part of such a thriving community and to be crowned Best Pub is an exceptional achievement beyond our wildest expectations.”
