Brought to Bristol by the team behind Eat Drink Bristol Fashion, Yurt Lush is a Mongolian yurt behind Temple Meads, serving breakfasts, lunches and drinks…and now also steaks on a Thursday night.
We were there to enjoy the launch of their steak night on January 31: a weekly event happening every Thursday from 5.30-8.30pm, that offers diners the chance to enjoy a steak, triple cooked chips, salad, mushrooms and a glass of wine for just £12.50. The steak offering is complemented by a bar that is fully stocked with beers, wines, ciders, spirits and soft drinks, alongside a fantastic, buzzing atmosphere and some seriously amazing decor.
On walking in, the smell of the wood burning stove was the first thing we noticed: perfect for a cold winter evening. The yurt itself looks absolutely amazing, with the main bar area at the front, an extra dining area at the far end and views of part of the kitchen behind the bar.
We got ourselves a couple of drinks (a pint of Butcombe Blond for Chris, a bottle of Sandford Orchards strawberry and lime cider for me) and headed to our table, where we had the chance to look at the menus for breakfast (8am – 12pm) and lunch (12-4pm) while we waited for our steaks to arrive. Both menus, up on blackboards on the wall, sounded fantastic: breakfast consisting of options such as a full English (or veggie equivalent), bacon sandwich, Welsh rarebit and more, with lunch including some hearty-sounding options such as stews, soups and pulled pork baps. Think we may need to revisit for a few more meals in the future…
We both opted to have our rump steaks cooked medium rare, and chose to enjoy a glass of red each as part of the £12.50 deal (beer and soft drinks are also included for those who don’t fancy a vino). These were brought out after our steaks, which was a surprise, but were lovely and full bodied and a great pairing with the meat.
Our rump steaks (from The Story Group, so they were bound to be good!) themselves were served topped with a generous pat of herbed butter, a side salad each and a pot of mushroom sauce to share, along with a perfectly grilled mushroom and half a tomato underneath the steak itself. The mushroom sauce was lovely and creamy and filled with a number of wild mushroom varieties, while the salad was essentially a coleslaw with no mayo: a lovely crunchy and fresh flavoured accompaniment to the meat.
The steak itself smelt fantastic when it arrived, and had a lovely charcoal flavour on the outside. The quality of the meat was evident – and while it was a little undercooked for our tastes, it really was a good steak.
The triple cooked chips were outstanding, with a lovely bite on the outside and soft and fluffy in the middle – the way a good chip should be! I like my chips salty and the seasoning was perfect for my tastes – but could be too salty for some.
With a glass of wine thrown in too, £12.50 is a bit of a bargain. An enjoyable evening of great quality local food in an unusual environment, with plenty of choice behind the bar and the beautiful smell of a wood burner to accompany your meal. We’re keen to head back to try their breakfast and Sunday lunch options…
