Lockside, Harts Bakery, Souk Kitchen and Source serve the best breakfasts in Bristol according to the results of a survey published in the new edition of the city’s best-selling guidebook The Naked Guide to Bristol, published by Tangent Books (£10.95).

More than 30 cafes across the city have been included in the guide in three categories: Recommended, Highly Recommended and Best in Bristol. Tangent Books publisher Richard Jones and contributor Frank Drake conducted the survey over a period of more than a year.

“We based our findings on a combination of quality of food and drinks, service, veggie options, value for money and atmosphere,” said Richard Jones. “We uncovered some real gems such as Britalia in Brislington and the Monte Carlo in Easton as well as checking out the more obvious choices.”

“The aim is to celebrate the quality and variety of Bristol breakfasts whether it’s a great-value breakfast at Zak’s in St Nick’s Market, a Caribbean breakfast at Café Joanna in Easton, a vegan treat at Café Kino in Stokes Croft or a full English at Windmill Hill City Farm. It was a tough job, but someone had to do it.”

The four Best Breakfasts all offer something extra: at Lockside in Cumberland Basin it’s the overall quality of the breakfast, the unlimited toast and coffee and early bird special deal; Hart’s at Temple Meads is commended for its superb pastries, croissants and coffee; Souk Kitchen in Southville offers a brilliant Middle Eastern breakfast, great service and atmosphere while the smoked haddock and poached egg at Source in St Nick’s Market is excellent and the café has the best toast in town.

All of the cafes have been sent a window sticker (pictured above) celebrating their achievement and a full list is published in the Eating Out section of the new edition of The Naked Guide to Bristol.

Jones and Drake are currently on a strict diet and once they have shed a few pounds will embark on a new challenge. ‘We’re not sure whether to do fish and chips next or curry,” said Jones. “Or maybe it should be muesli…”
