Peter Sanchez-Iglesias, one of the chef-proprietor brothers from Bristol’s Michelin-starred restaurant Casamia, was crowned the South West Champion in this year’s series of The Great British Menu on BBC2. Peter is the youngest chef ever to get to the GBM final and is the first chef from Bristol to enter the competition.

The Great British Menu is known for selecting some of the best chefs across the country to compete in regional heats and then a national final to create their best dishes at a major banquet in London.

Last night saw three South West chefs battle it out for a chance to cook at the special banquet. Peter was up against Michelin starred chef and passionate Cornishman Chris Eden, and rising star Emily Watkins.

For the regional heats, the chefs had to create a different style of dish every day: a starter, a fish dish, a main dish and a dessert. The program saw Peter cook a dish called ‘Picnic’, ‘Sea Side Memories’ – Pete’s take on the best fish and chips, ‘Sunday Roast’ – inspired by his Nan and for dessert a delicious apple pie.

The three South West chefs were judged by TV chef Phil Howard, the two Michelin-starred chef Tom Kerridge and a guest judge: comedian and writer Simon Day.

Peter commented, ‘Jonray and I have always relished taking on new challenges and pushing ourselves to the next level – and Great British Menu has been an absolute blast so far. I’m really excited about winning the South West regionals and can’t wait for the national finals now. I hope our Casamia customers are enjoying watching – and look forward to hearing people’s feedback!’

Great British Menu is broadcast on BB2 at 7.30 on Mondays from 28th January for nine weeks.
