Great news for the team at Poco on Jamaica Street, who were this week awarded the Sustainable Restaurant Association Award for Environment, thanks to their continued efforts to become waste-free. In their own words…
“Since Poco opened in November 2011, we have been striving to reduce our waste in every way possible. By recycling, upcycling, minimising the packaging that enters our restaurant and simply by serving food for free as pinchos before it is due to reach the end of its shelf life, we are getting closer to our ultimate aim of being waste-zero.
We are pleased to say that our efforts have been recognised by the Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA). Yesterday we were awarded the SRA award for Environment by the president of the organisation, Raymond Blanc. We were also highly commended for the award for the best food waste strategy, and the most sustainable restaurant of the year!
In order to become members of the SRA we went through a rigorous application process where we analysed our methods of sourcing, community engagement and our impact on the environment. Achieving 87% overall, we were awarded the highest of 3 stars for our commitment to our sustainable practices. Attending the event with the likes of Antonio Carluccio and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall has only inspired us to look at how we can improve the sustainability of our business even further.”
