So…Mickey Lavins Steak House in the city centre is no more. In its place is an altogether more sedate-looking building, after receiving a splash of blue paint and plenty of work to remove the previous garish exterior.
The sign says that that 10-11 Denmark Street will soon be home to El Puerto – a lounge, Spanish bar and kitchen – it is Brains Brewery that is behind this premises – the famous Welsh brewery that is still owned by descendants of the family who originally started the company back in 1882.
While “you can now find the Brains name above the door of over 270 pubs, bars and hotels across Wales and the West of England”, Brains pubs in Bristol are currently few and far between. The Crown Inn in Staple Hill, The Old Flowerpot in Kingswood, The Bowl Inn in Almondsbury, The Old Station in Hallatrow and The Langford Inn in Lower Langford are the only current Brains pubs in BS postcode areas.
This pub will not be managed by Brains, though – it will be the team behind El Puerto on Prince Street who are taking this on as a second venue.
When I contacted them today, a Brains spokesperson informed me that El Puerto would be opening in the first week of March. Looking forward to giving them a go…
