My Foodie Penpals parcel, August 2012

Spread the love

It’s that time again – the last day of the month is always “reveal day” for those taking part in the fantastic Foodie Penpals scheme. As a member of the scheme, every month I’ll send a parcel of goodies (normally local) to the person I’ve been paired up with, and I’ll receive a selection of food and drink related items from someone else on the list. To find out more about Foodie Penpals and how to get involved, click here…

This month, my parcel came all the way from Switzerland, from the lovely Ratri at The Nomadic Feast Kitchen. An Indonesian/Australian living in Switzerland, Ratri describes her blog as “a diary of the food I’ve encountered during my travels at parties, festivals, fiestas, holidays and carnivals… and my attempt to recreate them in my tiny Zurich kitchen.”

And what a parcel it was too!

It was great to be sent a selection of goodies that I wouldn’t normally be able to find in the UK…and the tea was the first thing that I opened. Avoiding caffeine means that I’m always on the lookout for new and exciting teas to try, and the one that Ratri sent me is perfect…Teapigs-style teabags filled with incredibly fragrant leaves: peppermint, apple mint, lemon balm, orange mint, edelweiss and cornflowers, beautiful!

The chocolate bar with a praline and whole hazelnut filling is being saved for an occasion where I need a quick sugar hit – as are the very tempting-looking chocolate dragees, filled with hazelnuts, almonds, raisins and orange peel. Mmmm…

We opened the Magenbrot at the weekend, similar to gingerbread, moist and sticky and containing honey and various spices. Delicious! The final item – a big bag of Leckerli biscuits – confused us slightly…while we loved the spice flavours (along with honey, hazelnuts, candied peel and kirsch), we weren’t too sure about the chewiness of the biscuit. I guess we’ll just have to give them another try to double check… 😉

Once again, another fantastic parcel – thanks so much, Ratri! I can’t recommend the Foodie Penpals scheme highly enough to any bloggers who are interested in taking part…
