Spread the love

102 Cookery School created by Nailsea Electrical is inviting children of school age across the city to win free ‘It’s Cool to Cook’ classes at 102 Cookery School. The competition to design the new ‘It’s Cool to Cook’ campaign logo is open Bristol-wide and is backed by local food heroes to get young people thinking about cooking and eating healthy, nutritional meals.

The winner will win a Samsung Galaxy Pad, a fantastic foraging trip and cookery course for their entire class. Young designers of the 9 runner-up entries will be invited (with all of their classmates) to attend a totally free ‘It’s Cool to Cook’ cookery course at 102 Cookery School.

The initiative aims to raise awareness among Bristol’s children that cooking is cool, healthy, and that most importantly it’s fun to do. 102 Cookery School’s initiative is open to all Bristol school children aged 5-15 who want to get involved. Shortlisted young designers will be invited to the cookery school on Gloucester Road to participate in free tailor-made classes.

All designs submitted will receive a fantastic 20% discount voucher off any cookery course at 102 Cookery School (which can also be redeemed by parents).

The content of the classes has been crafted by experts in childhood nutrition such as Maxine Goldbourne (children’s cookery expert) and published childhood nutritionist Siân Blunos, mother and author of baby food book ‘Cooking for Coco’ and wife of Michelin-starred chef Martin Blunos.

Maxine says:

“During the classes the children will be fully supervised and hands-on in the kitchen, learning how to handle and use a knife safely and confidently chop, slice and dice, learning about food costs, nutrition and food safety. They will make dishes that they will be able to replicate and help to replicate at home, such as making fresh pasta, watermelon salad, chicken & vegetable kebabs and ‘instant’ fruit ice-cream.

Pete Gilks, Director of Nailsea Electrical stated:

“When I was at school, I would have been teased for showing an interest in cookery. Today, attitudes have really changed with cool young chefs like Jamie Oliver constantly in the limelight all flying the flag for healthy eating. Today, with childhood obesity at the forefront of media attention, it is very important that we, as a cookery school do all we can to enthuse educate the next generation about healthy cuisine.

The campaign is backed by local media, celebrity chefs and industry leaders and ex England rugby players. These include Toby Gritten (recently featured on Jamie Oliver’s Great Britain), Peter Gorton (Masterchef of Great Britain), Martin Blunos (TV Chef), Pat Floyd, Josh Eggleton and City of Bristol College.

Martin Blunos commented

“It’s a great project to be involved in. 102 Cookery School has been really generous in donating these classes to school children.  It’s a fantastic initiative because educating the youngest children in nutrition is such a crucial element in the fight against obesity. It’s great that 102 want to make cooking cool and fun because this is a key part of engaging children in the food they are eating.”

The pupil who designs the winning logo will win a fantastic prize donated by Nailsea Electrical of a Samsung Galaxy Pad as well as a ‘Wild Food Welly Walk’  foraging trip and cookery course with Toby Gritten for their entire class. The 9 runner up designs will win a free hands-on lesson for their entire class at 102 Cookery School with various top local chefs who are backing the campaign.
