Feeding the 5000: College Green, May 12th

Spread the love

It’s great that College Green has now reopened, in time for the amazing weather that we’re hopefully (!) about to have.

Even better is the news that the space is being used for a great cause, with FareShare South West teaming up with “Feeding The 5000” there on May 12th, to host the first regional event.

A partnership between farmers and environmental charities that aim to encourage people to use surplus food more wisely, Feeding The 5000’s last event was held in London’s Trafalgar Square in November last year: an event that saw a free curry lunch being served to 5,000 people. The best bit? All of the food was created using fresh ingredients from supermarkets, such as mis-shapen vegetables, that would otherwise have been wasted.

The event on May 12th, which will take place on College Green between 1pm and 5pm, will be the first regional event for the team, and hosted in partnership with FareShare South West. It will also be supported by a range of local businesses and charities, including Soil Association, Bristol City Council, FoodCycle, Thali Café, Love Food Hate Waste, Kambe and Coexist.

Tom Herbert from the Fabulous Baker Brothers, eco-chef Tom Hunt of Poco Restaurant, Stokes Croft, and local chefs from Thali Café will all be taking part in the event, and “Waste” author Tristram Stuart will be among the line up of speakers. There will also be live music to accompany the lunch, a fantastic meal created from food that would normally have been wasted.

Head over on the day to join them for lunch – or if you’re feeling even more virtuous, offer to get involved. The organisers are looking for volunteers to help out on the day – to register your interest, simply click here to send them an email.
