Picton Pop Up – every Wednesday night

Another pop up on Bristol’s food scene – this one coming from two old school friends in their 20s who love good food but can’t necessarily afford to “eat like queens” all of the time!

Tess Swan-Ingrey and Lily MacClelland host the Picton Pop Up every Wednesday night at Tess’ home on Picton Street. They had the idea to start their venture after being mistaken for a restaurant – they often entertain friends in the glass-fronted kitchen, which used to be a jewellery shop.

“We prefer big flavour and simple but elegant cooking”, says Tess. “The first one was really an experiment as we had been talking about doing it for so long but never actually got down to it and we were happy if we just broke even. We put the menu up in the window and couldn’t believe the interest and support we received. It was a great success and we really enjoyed ourselves, meeting some people from the local community in the process which has encouraged us to carry on.”

Llly works part time in a “real” cafe and is studying to become a Steiner primary school teacher, while Tess is a full time mum to her one year old daughter, as well as volunteering at the Bristol Drugs Project. “Our real passion lies in food though”, says Tess. “We work so well together as have the same taste in food and have a real giggle at the same time. We make a point of utilising the local shops (minus Tesco) and cooking seasonal produce.”

“Our evenings are available to everyone, they are not stiff and pretentious but relaxed and fun. It’s still early days for Picton Pop Up but so far we are enjoying ourselves as much as our guests display to be doing themselves and are hoping to serve three delicious home-cooked-from-scratch courses to at least 12 lovely guests (we haven’t had a complaining guest so far fingers crossed..) every Wednesday from 8pm.”

This week’s menu consists of smoked trout pate with herby lemon butter and toast, slow cooked lamb shoulder with mashed autumn veg, greens and a fennel and tomato gratin, and a sticky toffee ginger pudding with brandy ice cream.
