Wednesday October 19th – a date for the diary, when Tim Owen and Carlton Jefferis (aka Dinewithi) will be serving up a delicious local and seasonal meal for their second stint at 40 Alfred Place…
Showcasing produce from Bristol and the South West, their first event sold within a week of announcing the date, so click this link and make your booking quickly! With space for 45 guests, a three course meal is just £25 per head and there is a fully licensed bar on the premises.
A friend and I were lucky enough to have booked places for their first event in mid-September, which proved to be a fantastic showcase for both ingredients from the South West and Tim’s skills in the kitchen.
Mark’s Bread sourdough with dukkah (a blend of ground nuts, herbs and spices) was brought to the table to whet our appetites while we enjoyed our (non-alcoholic!) drinks from Lovely Drinks in Barrow Gurney…
…and was followed by a ‘little bite from Tim’ (his definition of ‘little’ is different to most people’s!) of spicy smashed cannellini beans on a pitta crisp, with a wonderfully smokey chunk of kabanos sausage.
Our starter of Blagdon Lake smoked trout (smoked on the Monday morning by Jonny at the Chew Valley Smokehouse) was accompanied by rich chunks of roasted beetroot and a fiery horseradish sauce…
…and our main of 21-day hung Somerset ox cheeks were just as local, coming from Bakers of Nailsea. Marinated in red wine for 48 hours and braised for 16 hours, the meat was almost obscenely tender, and served with mash and cavolo nero. Good to see that all vegetables on the evening’s menu came from Tim’s suppliers in Bedminster and Totterdown.
We were both a little full by the time our dessert arrived but still managed to find the space to at least sample the Amalfi limoncello trifle with Italian meringue (Cotswold Legbar eggs, Somerset butter and Tim’s homemade, beautifully zesty lemon curd)…
A fantastic evening, and a great showcase of ingredients from the South West at their finest. I’m a little annoyed that I can’t make the next one…
