As of Monday, August 1st, Bristol will be home to another branch of South West mini-chain Boston Tea Party, with a building on the corner of Cheltenham Road and Bath Buildings now home to the company’s fourth Bristol cafe. We were lucky enough to be invited to their launch event on the Saturday beforehand to check it out for ourselves…
Opening 7am to 7pm from Monday to Saturday and from 9am to 7pm on Sundays, it offers everything you’d expect from a Boston Tea Party cafe, but, as with other branches, still retains its independent, non-chain feel. We were in the Park Street cafe the previous day, and the two are completely different: walk into the Cheltenham Road cafe and you’ll find yourself surrounded by modern, exposed metalwork side by side with reclaimed timber wall panels, mismatched wooden tables and chairs, and the drinks menu written onto the tiled wall with blue marker pen.
It may be a strange thing to focus on, but the toilets are fantastic too, with prison-style reclaimed doors and beautiful wooden-framed mirrors above the sink.
You’ll also, as you’d expect, be able to get a fantastic cup of coffee. Cheltenham Road is the first of their cafes to introduce coffee supplied by Bristol-based Extract Coffee, with the aim of rolling this out to other BTP cafes if it is a hit. You’ll also, for the first time in a BTP cafe, be able to order yourself a cup of filter coffee, which we tried while we were there: deliciously fruity!
Cheltenham Road will also be serving the same great food as we’re already used to from BTP – after today’s visit, we can highly recommend the eggs Benedict, eggs Florentine and the pancakes with maple syrup and smoked bacon!
Says boss Sam Roberts, “We are very excited to be opening in such a vibrant & interesting community in Bristol. Reaction to the new cafe opening has been really positive and we can’t wait to live up to expectations and become part of the local community.”
In addition, to celebrate the new opening, BTP has launched a ‘Design A Boston Barista T-shirt’ competition, with the winning design to be worn by the baristas at the new cafe. As well as seeing their design worn by the baristas, the winner will get a copy of the t-shirt, a meal for two at the new cafe, a kilo bag of the new house coffee from Extract, and a BTP KeepCup – a reusable mug being sold at the cafes to raise money for charity. The deadline for entries is September 1st, and more details can be found on the Boston Tea Party website.
Judging by the number of people trying to come in for a coffee during today’s launch party, I think the place will be a success, and rightly so – it’s always good to see local businesses doing well!
